Like many Southern towns, Ridgeland traces its beginnings to the Charleston-Savannah railroad which was built in the mid 1800’s. Originally called Gopher Hill after the gopher tortoise that was indigenous to the area, the town was renamed Ridgeland in 1902 when the Atlantic Coastline Railroad took over the railway line.
